Our 5th graders in Mrs. Mabry’s class turned into naval engineers this week! Students put their science skills to the test during the Build-a-Ship Lab.
The challenge sounded simple but required serious brainpower:
The Materials: Exactly one sheet of aluminum foil.
The Mission: Design a boat that floats and holds the maximum weight in marbles.
The Science: Applying real-world concepts of buoyancy, density, floating, and sinking.
Students experimented with different shapes, surface areas, and hull designs to see how displacement affects capacity. Ask your 5th grader how many marbles their ship managed to hold before taking on water!
Mrs. Mabry’s homeroom winners were: Jack, Bennie, Pyper, & Sarah (boat held 172 marbles)
Mrs. D’s homeroom winners: Lynnlee, Kanan, and Raylan (their boat held 456 marbles) & OVERALL winners
Mrs. Robbie’s homeroom winners: Sophia, Mason, and Roxi (boat held 103 marbles)

Good luck tonight, Mustangs—the whole school is behind you! 🐴 🔥

Our students have been diving deep into Maybe Something Beautiful, using their own artwork and illustrations to bring the text, settings, and characters to life.

Help Us "Pick Up the Tab" for St. Jude Families!
We are excited to continue our school-wide collection of aluminum pop tabs to support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital! By saving and donating your tabs, you are helping to "pick up the tab" for patients and their families so they can focus entirely on healing.
Save all of your pop tabs and let all of your family members know, too! Please send these pull tabs with your student to be dropped off at the 5th & 6th Grade Building.

Our 5th graders turned into full-fledged scientists today as they explored the phases of matter and the chemistry of solutions! They kicked off class by tracking a single ice cube’s transformation in real time and leveled up their scientific vocabulary, mastering terms like solute, solvent, solution, and solubility. Hands-on discovery is truly the best way to learn, and our 5th graders crushed it today! 🧊💧💨✨

We are so excited to introduce our amazing new teachers and staff members joining us this school year! Swipe through to meet the newest members of our Mustang family with each bringing incredible passion, fresh energy, and a deep dedication to helping our students learn, grow, and succeed every single day. 💙
Please join us in giving everyone a warm Strayhorn welcome!

This week, our students stepped into the shoes of real chemists to investigate the Properties of Matter. They sorted and categorized various everyday substances into solids, liquids, and gases—then took a closer look at the atomic level to explore how atoms and molecules behave in each state of matter. Swipe through to see our 5th-grade researchers in action! 📸🥼
